White Out

How to Wear White After Labor Day

Here are some dos and don’ts of a post-Labor Day white wardrobe by the pillars of the word –  Reader’s Digest Editors

The age-old “no white after Labor Day” fashion rule is often broken these days. But you might still be worried that your friends will criticize you for wearing white after the first Monday in September.  Here are some dos and don’ts of a post-Labor Day white wardrobe so you feel confident breaking the “rules.”

1. No white shoes

Instead, trade in your white pairs for nude ones, which will make you look thinner and longer. The same goes for white pantyhose. Fishnets, tights, and leggings are unflattering in white.

2.  Turn summer white into winter white

As the weather starts to get colder, make white an accessory instead of the main color. Men can layer white sweater vests over dark shirts, and women can accent outfits with white scarves or handbags. Off-white shades will work in the winter, too, matching well with seasonal colors like navy, gray, and brown.

3.  Layers, layers, layers

Labor Day typically signals the end of summer, when white clothes are more delicate. In the fall and winter, feel free to wear white with heavier layers, like sweaters and jackets.
